After a round is fired in a Springfield XD, the barrel and slide move back a short distance locked together, until the camming surface on the barrel makes contact with the camming surface on the insert (the locking block), which pulls the barrel down, unlocking the action. The barrel is stopped by the locking block and the slide continues rearward to extract and eject the case. The rearward motion of the slide is stopped by the coil bound recoil spring. When the slide return forward from the stored energy of the recoil spring a of the recoil spring, a live round is picked up from the magazine by the slide face and the round is loaded into the chamber for the follow up shot.
